Minnesota’s Niko Medved
Niko Medved is in his opening season as head coach of the Minnesota men’s basketball program, and his 13th season in Division I. Across four stints, he’s gathered a 226-176 overall record.
Medved has ended up becoming the head coach of three programs he used to be an assistant. Medved served as an assistant up to 2013 before he became the leader of the Furman program. Medved led Furman to a 23-11 overall record in 2016-17, and led the Paladins to a regular-season SoCon title.
Medved moved to the Drake program the following season, but only lasted a year before moving to Colorado State (he was succeeded by Darian DeVries). The bulk of Medved’s career was with CSU, where he led them to five 20-win seasons in seven years with three NCAA Tournament appearances. Fresh off a Round of 32 appearance, Medved was announced as the newest head coach of the Minnesota program in the spring of 2025.

Minnesota’s Game Notes (via Minnesota Athletics)
STARTING FIVE
- Minnesota is looking to return to the win column after a loss to Santa Clara as it closed out the Acrisure Invite Friday in Palm Desert, Calif. Cade Tyson scored a game-high 29 points, Isaac Asuma had 13 points and five assists, and Langston Reynolds added 12 points. The Gophers were down two starters, as both forward Robert Vaihola and guard Chansey Willis Jr. were out with injuries.
- Cade Tyson continues to shine, averaging 22.4 points, which tops the league and is ninth nationally. His 179 points this season rank first in the Big Ten and seventh nationally.
WHERE THEY RANK
- Along with Cade Tyson’s league-leading points per game, Minnesota ranks high in a few statistical categories.
- Jaylen Crocker-Johnson ranks second in the Big Ten in overall rebounds (73), fifth in rebounds per game (9.1), fourth in defensive rebounds per game (6.38), fifth in offensive rebounds per game (2.75), and third in double-doubles (3).
- Chansey Willis Jr. leads the Big Ten in steals (17) and steals per game (2.43). He is out for the season, however.
SHARP SHOOTERS
- Cade Tyson joins the Gopher men’s basketball program after playing the 2024-25 season at North Carolina and the previous two years at Belmont. Tyson enters his senior year scoring 993 collegiate points and 142 three-pointers in 91 career games. With Belmont, Tyson averaged 15 points, 5.3 rebounds in his two years there and was a second-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection in 2024 and the 2023 MVC Freshman of the Year.
- Bobby Durkin transferred to Minnesota after playing two seasons at Davidson and
was the team’s best three-point shooter the past two seasons. As a sophomore, Durkin averaged
13.5 points and 5.9 rebounds as well as 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals and started in 32 of 33 games.
No. 116 Minnesota’s KenPom notable numbers:
(out of 365 teams)
Tempo – No. 355 (Offense No. 234 / Defense No. 348)
Offensive Efficiency – No. 122
- Minnesota’s effective field goal percentage is at 51.9 percent (No. 145). They’re shooting 31 percent from three (No. 259) and 55.5 percent from two (No. 85).
- The Gophers’ best stat category is their free-throw attempt rate (FTA/FGA). A high rate suggests they’re getting to the line a good amount. Minnesota’s rate 53.5 percent (No. 4).
- They also haul in a good number of offensive rebounds with a 36.6 percent rate (No. 53) and assist on a lot of their made field goals at a 68.4 percent rate (No. 6).
- Minnesota has gotten a lot of production from the foul line. Free throws account for 25.5 percent of their point distribution (No. 24). They shoot a poor percentage at the line, however (66.7%, No. 290)
Defensive Efficiency – No. 122
- Opponents are shooting a 50.3 percent effective field goal percentage against Minnesota (No. 158). Teams have shot 38.5 percent from three (No. 323) and 45.9 percent from two (No. 44).
- The Gophers are good at limiting offensive rebounds, allowing just a 26.3 percent rate (No. 53).
- Threes are the obvious opportunity for opponents. The Gophers have given up 35.6 percent of their total opposing point distribution from beyond the arc (No. 65).
OG’s Pick
Overall: 7-0
I like Indiana’s chances in this one, especially if they can get hot on the outside. Minnesota’s numbers suggest they are a heavily inside-focused team on both ends of the floor, and Indiana has the chance to exploit that.
Not to mention, Minnesota has had some health questions in its past few games. Two starters were out in their last game, so that could be a factor.
Look for IU to get off to a quick start from beyond the arc in this one.
