Purdue’s Matt Painter
Matt Painter is in his 21st season as head coach of the Purdue men’s basketball program. As the second-longest tenured head coach in the Big Ten, behind only Tom Izzo, he’s compiled an overall record of 488-218 (.691).
Painter had a one-season stint with Southern Illinois before returning to his alma mater, and it was a good one. He led the Salukis to a 25-5 overall record and a MVC regular season title. Painter took SIU to the NCAA Tournament, but was knocked out in the first round.
Painter has led Indiana’s rival to some fantastic seasons across his tenure. He’s taken the Boilermakers to 16 NCAA Tournaments with five Big Ten regular-season titles. Although he has yet to win a National Championship, Painter led Purdue to a runner-up finish in the 2023-24 season. During his stint, he has a 22-13 record against the Hoosiers.

No. 8 Purdue’s KenPom notable numbers:
(out of 365 teams)
Tempo – No. 285 (Offense No. 254 / Defense No. 297)
Offensive Efficiency – No. 2
- Purdue holds an effective field goal percentage of 58.6 percent on the year (No. 8). The Boilermakers are shooting 38.3 percent from three (No. 21) and 59.4 percent on 2s (No. 17). They’re most productive on 2s, for they account for 53.2% of their total point distribution (No. 61). They don’t get to the free throw line at a high rate.
- The Boilermakers haul in a good amount of offensive rebounds at a 36.2% rate (No. 40).
- They also take care of the ball well with a 13.8% turnover percentage (No. 16).
- Purdue assists at a high 65.2% rate (No. 8).
Defensive Efficiency – No. 30
- Opponents hold a 50.2 percent effective field goal percentage against Purdue (No. 135). Teams are shooting 32.3 percent from three (No. 108) and 51.6 percent on 2s (No. 188).
- One of Purdue’s biggest strengths is limiting the number of fouls they commit on shots. Opposing team free throws attempts are just 22.2% of field goal attempts (No. 3).
- They have given up offensive rebounds at a 27.3 percent rate (No. 43) and force turnovers at a 16.4% rate (No. 219).
OG’s Pick
Overall: 14-4
Indiana did a good job of bouncing back against Rutgers, but they have a tough bid ahead of them with Purdue. The Boilermakers remain one of the most efficient offensive teams in the country and play complementary defense to back it up.
Braden Smith has shown why he’s one of the best guards in the country, but may be a little banged up with an ankle injury after facing Illinois on Saturday. Still, I just think Purdue has the better overall roster and will keep Indiana at bay.
Pick: Indiana 62 – Purdue 74
