IU baseball remains a factor in the expanded Big Ten.
Indiana will play in its 12th-straight Big Ten Tournament next week. The Hoosiers have the longest active streak of tournaments made (12) by any team in the conference.
Going into their Saturday regular season finale at Michigan, IU was in sixth place in the league. 12 teams will qualify for the Big Ten Tournament. The field was expanded from eight after the addition of the West Coast schools.
Head coach Jeff Mercer won his 100th regular season Big Ten game on Friday night in Ann Arbor. He became the fastest coach in program history to reach that mark, doing it in under seven full seasons. He’s won at least 15 games in conference play in all but one season at IU.
For the 12th time in the last 13 seasons, the Indiana Baseball team has won at least 30 games in a season. It’s three-straight campaigns for Mercer with at least 30 regular season victories. It’s also the third-straight season with at least 15 Big Ten wins.
As one of the premier bats in college baseball, Indiana’s junior outfielder Devin Taylor was named as a National Semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy. The award’s committee announced a list of the 64 best players from across the country on Thursday (May 15) afternoon. He’s hitting .363 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs on the season through Friday. The Dick Howser Trophy is one of the most prestigious awards in collegiate baseball and is given to the top player in the nation on an annual basis.
Indiana Baseball (31-22, 16-13 B1G) will go for the series sweep on Saturday afternoon in Ann Arbor. The Big Ten bracket will be revealed later in the weekend. That tournament is May 20-25 in Omaha, Neb.
The Hoosiers are No. 61 in the college baseball RPI through Friday games. They’ll probably need a strong Big Ten Tournament run to have any chance to make the NCAA Tournament. A series sweep at Michigan would help significantly as well.
