Hoosiers in the NFL: End of Season Edition

Another NFL regular season has come and gone, and IU football was well represented once again.

In total, nine former Indiana University football players registered at least one snap during the 2018 NFL season.

Below is a summary of their performance, including a strong finish to the season for several individuals.

    TEVIN COLEMAN, RB, ATLANTA FALCONS

    Att – 167
    Yards – 800
    YPC – 4.8
    TD – 4
    Rec – 32
    Rec Yards – 276
    TD – 5

Notes:  Coleman was the starter all year in Atlanta and saw a slightly expanded role due to an injury to Devonta Freeman.  Coleman ended up with career highs in carries, yards and yards per carry.  He finished 22nd in the NFL in rushing yards and compiled his first ever 1,000 all-purpose yard season.

    CHRIS COVINGTON, LB, DALLAS COWBOYS

    Photo of Chris Covington

Notes:  Covington saw one snap on defense and 28 plays on special teams for his rookie season in Dallas.  He registered two tackles.  The Cowboys made the playoffs.

DAN FEENEY, G, LOS ANGELES CHARGERS

    Games/Started – 16/16

Notes:  Feeney started every game for the Chargers, and interestingly, was the only player on the team to see every single offensive snap (995) of the season.  Feeney also saw 74 snaps on special teams.  Feeney and the Chargers will travel to Baltimore in the playoffs this weekend.

    JORDAN HOWARD, RB, CHICAGO BEARS

    Att – 250
    Yards – 935
    Avg – 3.7
    TD – 9
    Rec – 20
    Rec Yards – 145

Notes:  Howard had a really strong finish to the year, including two 100 yard games in the final four contests.  He saved his best for last with 21 carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns in week 17 vs. Minnesota.  Howard will continue to be the main workhorse for Chicago in the playoffs.  He finished 14th in the NFL in rushing yards and tied his career high for rushing touchdowns.  Howard and the Bears will host Nate Sudfeld and the Eagles in the NFL playoffs.

CODY LATIMER, WR, NEW YORK GIANTS

    Games/Started – 6/2
    Rec – 11
    Yards – 190

    TD – 1

    Kickoff returns:  5 returns/123 yards

Notes:  Latimer went on injured reserve with a hamstring injury but was able to battle back and play in the final two weeks.  He found the end zone in week 17 against Dallas.

RODGER SAFFOLD, OT, LOS ANGELES RAMS

    Games/Started – 16/16

Notes:  Saffold was once again a dominant fixture on the Rams offensive line, starting every game this season.  Saffold will be playing in the postseason as the Rams won the NFC West and are the No. 2 seed in the NFC.  The longest tenured Hoosier currently in the NFL and the longest tenured Ram will be a free agent in March.

JASON SPRIGGS, OT, GREEN BAY PACKERS

    Games/Started -13/2

Notes:  Spriggs started in weeks 14 and 15 for Green Bay.  In total Spriggs saw 291 snaps on offense and another 61 on special teams before missing the final two games of the season with a concussion.

    NATE SUDFELD, QB, PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

    Photo of Nate Sudfeld

Sudfeld was 1 for 2 for 22 yards and a touchdown on the season.

Notes:  Similar to last year, Sudfeld finally saw action in the last game of the season, this time due to a late Nick Foles injury.  After being mired on the bench, it is possible right now that Sudfeld starts next week in the Eagles Wild Card playoff game at Chicago.

Sudfeld threw his first career touchdown pass in his only attempt in Week 17.

Reminder: With a win, and a Vikings loss, the @Eagles will make the #NFLPlayoffs.

With Nick Foles almost certain to move on to another team next year, Sudfeld should move up to the backup role.

    IAN THOMAS, TE, CAROLINA PANTHERS

    Photo of Ian Thomas

    Games/Started – 16/6
    Rec – 36
    Yards – 333
    TD – 2

Notes:  Thomas found the end zone for the second straight week to end the year as he finished the season strong.  He took advantage of Greg Olsen injuries throughout the season to put up a very impressive rookie campaign.  His stats over the last five weeks of the season would average out to 80 catches, 787 yards and 6 touchdowns over a full 16 game season.

    Also on a Roster/No Snaps:

    • Simmie Cobbs, New Orleans

    Practice Squad Players:

    • Robert McCray, Kansas City (injured list)
    • Shane Wynn, New Orleans
    • Tegray Scales, Indianapolis
