Ball State University has announced a change in men’s basketball leadership, with former IU basketball player Michael Lewis’ four-year stint as the Cardinals’ head coach coming to an end.
Lewis guided Ball State to a 20-12 record in his first campaign (2022-23) while leading the Cardinals to their first 20-win season in six years. The program has since endured consecutive seasons with 15, 14 and 12 wins. He finished with a 61-64 mark as head coach of the Cardinals.
Lewis was hired by Ball State in March of 2022.
He was a long-time assistant coach prior to taking the Ball State job. Most recently, Lewis was an assistant at UCLA, with stops at Nebraska and Butler among his other stints.
Lewis, who played at IU under head coach Bob Knight from 1996-2000, served as a graduate assistant for Knight for two seasons at Texas Tech.
As a senior at Indiana (1999-00), Lewis served as team captain and secured third-team All-Big Ten honors. He concluded his collegiate career as Indiana’s all-time leader in career assists (545). He now ranks second in career assists, as Yogi Ferrell had 633 from 2012-15.
