Class of 2027 5-star big man Darius Wabbington appears to be nearing a commitment announcement.
The 6-foot-11 Arizona product has completed three official visits — to Indiana, Arizona and Illinois — all earlier this month. Previously planned trips to finalists Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina, and Texas are off the board.
Long thought to be a heavy Arizona lean, Wabbington visited IU during the first weekend of September, and the trip at least as him thinking.
247Sports national analyst Eric Bossi said this week on the CBS Sports College Basketball podcast he likes Arizona as things wind down, but says the Hoosiers have moved the needle and he’d give Indiana “a little bit more than a punchers chance” to land Wabbington.
“Indiana is certainly in the mix, and not only do they have a strong offer NIL-wise, they also made a strong pitch and had a strong visit with him,” Bossi said. “It sounds like the entire family really enjoyed it.”
Bossi said Arizona has been recruiting Wabbington since before high school, and relationships give them the edge. Indiana can offer the potential for immediate playing time if Aiden Sherrell make the leap to the NBA after this season.
According to the average of the national rankings, Wabbington is a 5-star, the No. 13 overall player in the 2027 class, and the No. 2 center.
Wabbington attends Sunnyslope H.S. and he led the school to an open state championship. He averaged 17.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game as a high school junior.
This spring, Wabbington posted 13.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game while shooting over 38% from three for the Compton Magic on the Adidas 3SSB Circuit.
He was named to the USA Basketball U18 National Team.
Indiana currently has two commits in the 2027 class — 4-star guard Chase Branham, and 7-foot German center Felix Kiehlneker.
