Offensive line is probably the most underappreciated position on a football team. With fans following the football, it is really difficult to be noticed. How many IU fans noticed that the best offensive lineman in the history of the program was playing in Bloomington just over the last few years? Of course these things are debatable, but as we mentioned at the outset of this series, to be one of the all-time Top 10 players, you have to be a true outlier. Was Dan Feeney an outlier? Consider this: During the 2015 and 2016 seasons, two-time captain Dan Feeney became…

The Daily Hoosier is previewing each position group during the final 10 days leading up to the opening kickoff of the 2018 Indiana University football season on September 1 at Florida International. Today we take a look at the defensive line. There will be a recurring theme as we look at the 2018 IU defense — important players have moved on, and important players are back. The Hoosiers only return four starters on defense. Nevertheless there is returning veteran leadership at each level. A core of seniors on the defensive line will look to lead the way for coach Mark…
The Hoosiers entered the 1967 Rose Bowl season in a situation similar to 2018 — with a down-to-the-wire quarterback competition. Sophomores Harry Gonso and John Isenbarger battled it out until the final week. Of course Gonso won that battle, and things worked out okay for IU that season. Isenbarger’s consolation prize? A new position. The multi-talented athlete would be IU’s new tailback. That worked out okay too. In a program with a more than 125 season history, you have to have been a true outlier to make this list. Isenbarger has multiple claims to fame in this regard. Most notably,…
The Daily Hoosier is previewing each position group during the final 10 days leading up to the opening kickoff of the 2018 Indiana University football season on September 1 at Florida International. Today we look at the Special Teams. For most football fans, the special teams tend to be an afterthought, but in football, and especially college football, they can make or break you. For a program like Indiana going through the rigors of the Big Ten, special teams excellence is essential. Let’s face it, teams like Ohio State, Michigan and others have players on special teams that would be…
The Big Ten released the complete men’s basketball conference schedule with the dates of each contest for the upcoming 2018-19 season. The headline from a conference-wide perspective is the switch to a 20-game schedule. This change resulted in December Big Ten basketball. The Indiana December games were reported yesterday and you can see those as part of the overall Big Ten schedule below. All Big Ten teams will play seven teams home and away, three teams only at home, and three teams only away. While we have known IU’s 2018-19 Big Ten home and away opponents for some time, the…
While there are some Hoosier names that have the comfort of knowing they have a 2018 NFL roster spot, others are competing right now to make the various 53-man teams on opening day. Take a look below at the stats, news and notes from preseason week two for the various former Indiana University football stars that are competing for 2018 roster spots. IAN THOMAS, CAROLINA TE Thomas found the end zone in week two on a 27 yard touchdown pass from Cam Newton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alzgxTrli-Q He had two catches for 35 yards on the game. Thomas has been turning heads in…
It is just over a month until Hoosier Hysteria, and one sign that college basketball is returning soon is the annual release of the Indiana men’s basketball roster. This is the first chance to look for official jersey numbers for newcomers, changes in heights and weights, unexpected turnover, and more. Here’s what we noted, in numerical order, after taking a pass through the new roster. Romeo Langford is wearing jersey number zero. It has been known for some time that he would don the null, but the release of the roster makes Langford officially IU’s fourth all-time number zero after…
For the second consecutive year, there will be Big Ten men’s basketball in December. As expected Indiana will have two conference games in the early part of the month in order to accommodate the new 20-game Big Ten schedule. The Hoosiers will have both a conference home and away contest in December. Jon Rothstein broke the dates and opponents via Twitter: https://twitter.com/JonRothstein/status/1031614322622050309 https://twitter.com/JonRothstein/status/1031615527507120128 Both Northwestern and Penn State are widely expected to finish in the bottom half of the 14 team conference. These early contests should provide IU an opportunity to get off to a good start in league play.…
It takes a special player to play in the Big Ten as a freshman. To produce at a high level at running back at such a young age, it takes more than talent. It takes a physical specimen to withstand the bruising hits. There was a time when it looked like Morgan Ellison would not withstand high school football. After his junior year at Pickerington Central High School, Ellison was only considered a 2-star recruit, rated No. 120 nationally among running backs and No. 1,675 overall in the 2017 class. The Ohio native broke each of his legs during his…
