Indiana University has released a statement on the latest Academic Progress Report released by the NCAA: BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom, according to the latest NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR) data released today.  Nine Indiana programs earned perfect 1,000 APR scores for the 2016-17 academic year while three teams earned perfect multi-year scores (2013-14 through 2016-17). The nine IU programs earning a perfect APR score for 2016-17 academic year are field hockey, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis and volleyball.  The three IU…

They are right.  These rankings are way too early.  We shouldn’t even acknowledge them.  But when national folks are clearly just taking last year’s rankings and layering on some quick notes about recruits and transfers, well, we can stay silent no more! CBS Sports is the latest to take a shot at a so-called “way too early” men’s college basketball Top 25.  NBC had something similar a couple days ago.  IU was not included in either set of rankings. The main problem with even attempting rankings at this point is that there are so many question marks related to the NBA…

For more than 100 years, the history of the jersey number zero at Indiana was just that — zero, nothing, no one, zilch, nada.  It is somewhat surprising to learn that no one had ever worn the jersey number zero at Indiana since the program started in 1901 until a walk-on made the leap in 2009. Today we take a fun look back at the very brief history of the jersey number zero at IU in light of the suggestion on social media that class of 2018 five-star recruit Romeo Langford will sport that number next season. KORY BARNETT -…

Remember all that talk about a 5 game losing streak, and what is wrong with Indiana baseball?  That was so last week. If you ask just about anyone who they think is the most likely in the class of 2019 to attend Indiana, their response is Greenwood, Indiana native Trayce Jackson-Davis.  The 6-foot-9 power forward is rated as a 5-star recruit based on the 247 Sports composite, and he is the 20th best player in the country according to that service. The 5-star rating reflects a significant move up the charts for Jackson-Davis, as he has made big strides over the last few years.  As a freshman he used his size to primarily be a presence with rebounding and defense.  Since then…

Catcher Josh Phegley has had some bad luck in recent years with injuries.  The former Indiana catcher has only appeared in 82 games over the last two seasons for the Oakland A’s. That lack of availability might be part of the reason why the A’s went a different route this spring and Phegley ended up with Oakland’s Triple A affiliate in Nashville. While it probably wasn’t the path back to the majors that he was expecting or seeking, Phegley was called up by Oakland on Thursday and joined the A’s in Toronto for a four game series. Oakland placed catcher Bruce…

It is the final piece of the 2018-19 Indiana basketball season puzzle.  If he stays, the season looks quite promising.  If he goes, there might be more questions than answers.  Several announcements have been coming out over the last few days regarding various decisions vis-a-vis the NBA Draft.  IU’s Second Team All Big Ten forward Juwan Morgan has until May 30th to decide whether he will forego his senior season and pursue professional basketball. Multiple reports have indicated that Morgan has had workouts with NBA teams.  These workouts can take on a lot of different looks on a team-by-team basis,…

The updated 2019 Top247 rankings were released Thursday by 247Sports. We’ve said it before and it bears repeating — Archie Miller is going “all-in” on his class of 2019.  Based on the updated ratings it is once again clear that Indiana is focusing its recruiting at the highest levels.  We believe that Indiana is in legitimate contention for at least eight 5-star rated players in the class, and the top 11 players that it is pursuing are all in the Top 100. While in years past the Hoosiers have had to dip into the lower rated and even unrated groups, that doesn’t…
