Indiana knew what was coming on Saturday. But preparing for it, and facing the real thing are two entirely different beasts. It turns out scout team up-tempo offense in frigid Bloomington was no match for Lane Kiffin’s torrid-paced offensive attack in hot and humid Tampa. Just how fast was the Ole Miss offense going at the Outback Bowl? Their seven-play, 57-yard drive to open the game took just 2:04 off the clock. And their decisive six-play, 63-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter chewed up just 1:46. Everything in between followed the same exhausting script. Indiana (6-2) forced 20 takeaways…

Trailing 20-6 in the third quarter in Tampa, Indiana looked like a lost cause at the Outback Bowl. But after a sluggish start the Hoosiers found answers late to tie the game at 20 with 5:40 remaining. After scoring just six points through their first eight drives, IU put together consecutive 80-yard touchdown drives to momentarily catch Mississippi. The fact-paced Ole Miss offense tormented IU for most of the day, and the Rebel attack had a quick answer, with a 6-play, 63 yard drive to reclaim a 26-20 lead after a missed extra point. The drive took just 1 minute…
Winning a bowl game has been a stated program goal of head coach Tom Allen since he took the job four years ago. Indiana has been routinely registering once-in-generation accomplishments for the last 15 months. Now the Hoosiers have their sights set on a something that has eluded them for 29 years. IU has been close, losing three bowl game appearances over the last five years by a total of six points. The next opportunity comes on Saturday in Tampa. It’s Indiana and Ole Miss at the 2020 Outback Bowl. THE OUTBACK BOWL: No. 7/8 INDIANA (6-1) vs. MISSISSIPPI (4-5)…
Is the Indiana program making a statement by excluding the Big Ten logo from its jerseys and helmets for the Outback Bowl? Head coach Tom Allen says no, but the league’s logos are in fact excluded. And Allen did not say that was done on accident. Soon after a viral Twitter post highlighted that IU removed the Big Ten logo from its jerseys and helmets, Allen released a statement. “To clarify what we are wearing on our uniform and helmet for tomorrow’s Outback Bowl: since I took over as Indiana head coach, this program’s mantra has been LEO, Love Each…
Shunned by the College Football Playoff committee, the Outback Bowl wasn’t necessarily the game Indiana wanted. But if nothing else, the program’s second straight January bowl game delivers on familiarity. And ultimately, that is something that has head coach Tom Allen excited about this contest. The Indiana roster and coaching staff have deep ties to both the Tampa area, and to the opponent — Ole Miss. Below is a quick summary of the connections. Indiana (6-1) and Ole Miss (4-5) kick at 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Raymond James Stadium. The game will be televised on ABC. TAMPA CONNECTION…
Indiana head coach Tom Allen met with the media from Tampa as his team finalizes their preparation for Ole Miss at the Outback Bowl. Allen discussed his team’s health, opt-outs, returning to Tampa, individual awards, and much more. Indiana was shut down due to a COVID-19 outbreak beginning in early December after the win over Wisconsin. On the health front, Allen said this about the state of his team: “We feel good about it,” Allen said. “The thing that you have to realize is every day they test. So, we have got one more of those. Had today’s test and…
Former Michigan offensive lineman Zach Carpenter is transferring to Indiana. The 6-foot-5, 329-pound Carpenter played center for the Wolverines in 2020. Carpenter entered his name in the transfer portal earlier this month, and he announced that he was headed to IU on New Year’s Eve. https://twitter.com/CZach23/status/1344818546958880768?s=20 Carpenter had seen playing time in five of Michigan’s six games this season and started the last two against Rutgers and Penn State. He made he collegiate debut at center against Minnesota and saw special teams action against IU. He was the presumptive starting center going forward at Michigan and should have four years…
You take ’em any way you can get ’em in the Big Ten this year. IU didn’t bring home any style points on Wednesday night in an 87-85 overtime win over Penn State. But the Hoosiers did make key plays in meaningful moments to snap a two-game losing streak and secure its first league win. And perhaps just as important, a couple vitally important veterans gained some confidence along the way. Indiana (6-4, 1-2) will face Maryland on Monday, Jan. 4 in Bloomington at 8 p.m. OVERALL (B) This one had an ominous feel as the second half wore on.…
