Indiana assistant coach Kenya Hunter delivered Parker Stewart and Xavier Johnson to the current roster, and he played a major role in IU landing 2021 5-star Tamar Bates, but a pair of his main 2022 targets officially came off the board on Saturday. Virginia based small forward Just Taylor announced on Saturday he has verbally committed to play at Syracuse. The 6-foot-6 Taylor had visited IU ten days ago and quickly moved to wrap up his recruitment. Earlier in the day, DeMatha Catholic shooting guard Rodney Rice announced a top six list that did not include IU. The 6-foot-4 Rice…
Indiana class of 2022 verbal commit CJ Gunn spoke with The Daily Hoosier on Saturday afternoon at the Charlie Hughes Shootout in Carmel, Ind. The 6-foot-5 Lawrence North High School shooting guard spoke about his development, early impressions of the new IU staff, plans to visit Bloomington, and more. Gunn committed to IU in February and confirmed his commitment after the hiring of Mike Woodson. Mike Woodson and his staff haven’t won a game yet on the basketball court. But off it, the feedback has been consistently positive, and the good vibes have been amplified since in person visits opened back up this month. The bottom line? This staff seems to make connections and lasting impressions to a much greater extent than what we’ve seen recently at IU. Whether it was re-recruiting his own team, winning in the transfer portal, or landing a five-star high school product like Tamar Bates, Woodson has shown the ability to win and win big off the court. And the…
Kyle Schwarber’s 12 career stolen bases don’t scream leadoff hitter. Neither does his .232 career average at the plate. But his month of June calls for as many at-bats as possible, and the decision to put Schwarber in the leadoff spot now looks like a stroke of genius. The former IU slugger has been on a record-breaking run in June for the Nationals since he was moved to the top of the order recently. On Thursday Schwarber became the first player in baseball history to homer 12 times in the leadoff spot across 13 games. Schwarber hit a leadoff homer…
Indiana has seen significant roster turnover since its historic Elite Eight run in March. While the Hoosiers anticipate the return of their starting lineup from the 2020-21 season, transfers out of the program created several roster openings and some questions about depth below the first five. IU has made a major move to upgrade its roster with the addition of transfer Caitlin Hose. The Hazel Green, Ala. product comes to Bloomington from Georgia where she played in 60 games and made 13 starts in her three-year career. The 5-10 guard was part of a program that advanced to the 2021…
IU basketball legend Keith Smart joined our friends at the 1 Star Recruits podcast earlier this week. Smart started 52 games for the Hoosiers, averaging 13.2 points as a senior and 11.2 points as a junior. He was named Co-MVP of the team in 1988 and is tied for the IU single-game record with 15 assists which he recorded in an NCAA tournament game win over Auburn in 1987. Smart talks about his 1987 national championship game winning shot, the 2020 Bob Knight reunion, his coaching career, and much more. The segment with Smart begins at the 16 minute mark…
New IU football punter James Evans met with the media recently to discuss his arrival in the United States and early days in the program. Evans enrolled in 2021 spring classes. He had never played football or visited the United States prior to his arrival. He was scheduled to make a trip to the U.S. in July and visit IU in December but did not due to COVID-19. Evans trained at Prokick Australia, a training ground for punters and kickers, and he becomes the second-straight Indiana punter to arrive in Bloomington via Prokick following Haydon Whitehead. Evans played rugby and…
Indiana will host St. John’s in connection with the 2021 Gavitt Games. The news was first reported by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports. The game will be held on Nov. 17 in Bloomington. The Hoosiers are 5-2 all-time against St. John’s, with the last meeting coming in 2016 in connection with the Maui Invitational. The Hoosiers won that matchup 83-73. St. John’s last win in the series was a 1999 NCAA Tournament contest. Future Indiana Pacers’ star Ron Artest had 13 points and five steals in that game. The Red Storm were 16-11 in 2020-21. Led by now third year…
Class of 2023 forward Xavier Booker took an unofficial visit to Indiana on Wednesday. He left the Bloomington campus with a scholarship offer from head coach Mike Woodson and the IU program. Booker announced the offer on his Twitter page. https://twitter.com/RealXman23/status/1407830445098668042?s=20 Booker is a player we have covered here going back to April when he started to emerge on the travel circuit with his George Hill All Indy U-16 squad. The Cathedral High School (Indianapolis, Ind.) product soared up the Rivals’ 2023 rankings earlier this month, from unranked all the way to the No. 35 spot nationally in the class.…
