Announcements continue to roll in for Indiana’s 13 players eligible to return due to the special NCAA eligibility extension. Redshirt senior guard Mackenzie Nworah announced on Tuesday that he would be returning to the program for the 2021 season. Kickoff specialist Jared Smolar announced his intent to return on Wednesday. Nworah was a season-opening starter in 2020 and he has been a starter off and on throughout his time at IU. Indiana freshman guard Anthony Leal met with the media on Wednesday. The Bloomington, Ind. product is averaging 11.3 minutes per game thus far on the 2020-21 season. The 2020 Indiana Mr. Basketball hails from Bloomington South High School where he finished his career with a school record 1,620 points. Indiana should have one of the best defensive backfields in the country in 2021. That unit got a big boost on Tuesday when husky Marcelino Ball announced he is returning for the 2021 season. The first of what could be several decisions to return to the IU football program came on Tuesday morning from defensive end Mike Ziemba.  Later on Tuesday, defensive back Raheem Layne and tight end Kham Taylor confirmed their returns as well. Under the NCAA’s blanket decision to grant an extra year of eligibility to all fall athletes, Ziemba will return for a fifth season at IU. Finish was the one word last week for the IU football team going into the Outback Bowl.  That didn’t work out so well, but the IU basketball program took the idea and ran with it on Monday night in Bloomington. Indiana defeated Maryland on Monday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington by a final score of 63-55. Trayce Jackson-Davis led IU with 22 points and 15 rebounds.  The Hoosiers overcame a 37-27 second half deficit with a prolonged 33-11 run to put the game away. Basketball inventor Dr. James Naismith once said that the state of Indiana was the “center of the sport.” Never will that be more true than this March. Multiple outlets reported that the central Indiana area will host the entire 2021 NCAA Tournament.  The NCAA later confirmed those reports.  WISH-TV’s Anthony Calhoun appears to have been the first to break the news.
