Thad Matta’s stint in Bloomington was short-lived. After spending the 2021-22 season as the Associate Athletic Director for Basketball Administration at Indiana working under AD Scott Dolson, Matta was named Sunday as the new head coach at Butler. The new position will mark a return trip to Butler for Matta.  The Indianapolis school is both his alma mater, and he coached there during the 2000-01 season. Indiana has clear frontcourt needs in 2023, and the Hoosiers took one step to address them when they offered class of 2023 forward Arrinten Page on Saturday. The 6-foot-9 Atlanta, Ga. product (Wheeler H.S.) is playing this weekend at the USA Basketball men’s junior national team April mini-camp in New Orleans. Page has offers from Radford, Georgia State, Kennesaw State, UAB, Wichita State and UCF in addition to IU. He does not currently appear in the national rankings. Montverde Academy won its second straight championship at the GEICO Nationals on Saturday afternoon at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Ft. Myers, Fla. With one IU signee and three recruiting targets on the roster, the Eagles defeated Link Academy 60-49 behind a dominant defensive effort. Class of 2023 IU basketball verbal commit Gabe Cupps was named Ohio Mr. Basketball in separate votes by both the state’s coaches and media over the last week. “I think it’s really cool that people recognize that I try to do things the right way,” Cupps told Matt Denison on the Hoosier Report on Thursday.  “I think a lot of it was just how well our team played these last two years.” Cupps helped lead his father’s Centerville H.S. team to 45 consecutive wins, which included a state championship in 2021 and a state runner-up finish two weeks ago. A pair of Indiana-bound Georgia products earned high honors in the Peach State on Friday. Class of 2022 signee Kaleb Banks was named the Class 4A Player of the Year by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Meanwhile, class of 2023 verbal commit Jakai Newton was named Class 7A Second Team All-State.  Class 7A is the state’s largest. Class of 2023 interior offensive lineman William Larkins visited Indiana over the weekend and wasted no time announcing his next move. The 6-foot-4 and 300 pound Hollywood, Fla. (Chaminade-Madonna Prep) product announced his verbal commitment to IU on Thursday evening. “I’m very blessed to say that I’ve committed to Indiana University,” Larkins wrote on his Twitter page. Larkins also had offers from Michigan and Florida Atlantic.  According to the 247Sports Composite, Larkins is a 3-star prospect, the No. 794 overall player in the class, and the No. 62 interior lineman.  He could play center or guard at the next level.…

The news came quick last week. In the span of about 48 hours, IU went from over-signed by three players to an open scholarship for the 2022-23 team. Khristian Lander, Michael Durr, Parker Stewart and Rob Phinisee all put their names in the transfer portal, and none of those decisions could be chalked up as a major surprise by anyone paying close attention. Indiana has three class of 2022 recruits signed up for next season, meaning they have a net opening of one scholarship for the 2022-23 roster. C.J. Gunn has a chance to become the 28th winner of the coveted Indiana Mr. Basketball award who went on to play for IU. The 6-foot-5 Gunn is one of five finalists for the honor, the Indianapolis Star announced on Wednesday. Joining Gunn on the list of finalists are Purdue-bound guards Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer, Wisconsin-bound guard Connor Essegian, and Chesterton’s Travis Grayson. Watch as new Indiana football running backs coach Craig Johnson took questions from the media this week and shared observations on his group at spring practice.
