As he ran up and down the steep stairs of Assembly Hall as a freshman, Mike Woodson likely could not have imagined that the man glaring up at him from the Branch McCracken Court far below would one day be he his strongest advocate. And it would have been impossible to envision that this seemingly crazed coach would break down as Woodson’s promising senior season and perhaps entire playing career appeared to be coming to an end sooner than planned. Woodson had a strong disciplinarian for a coach in high school, and he knew of Bob Knight’s demanding reputation. But…

Indiana has formally entered the mix for an already talented 7-foot center from Texas with a much higher ceiling. Demetrius Stanton of Dead Stock Visuals was the first to report that IU had offered class of 2022 big man Vince Iwuchukwu. Iwuchukwu is ranked No. 25 overall in the class of 2022 according to the 247Sports Composite. He is a 4-star recruit and the No. 3 center in the class according to that same service. 247Sports national analyst Brandon Jenkins gave this assessment of Iwuchukwu in January, posted on his profile page there: “Iwuchukwu is a fairly raw and mechanical…
It started, or ended if your prefer, with a shot that signaled the revival of a program, immediately followed by a court storm that effectively put a series on pause. Now it is the question that, unlike the Indiana-Kentucky basketball series, is seemingly playing on repeat. On Thursday it was Mike Woodson’s turn to answer the question that college basketball fans have been asking since Christian Watford brought more than 17,000 fans out of their seats and scurrying towards the Branch McCracken Court, where they may or may not have trampled Kentucky coach John Calipari’s spine. WISH-TV sports director Anthony…
Class of 2022 5-star forward Jalen Washington is beginning to emerge this spring, as he starts to realize the promising potential that had been delayed by multiple serious injuries during his first two years of high school basketball. The 6-foot-9 Washington was offered by Indiana in 2019, and several others have joined in the pursuit of the Gary, Ind. product, including North Carolina and Illinois in recent weeks. Washington’s game has evolved over the last year. Most notably, he has become a knock-down perimeter shooter out to the 3-point line. Meanwhile, he is beginning to regain much of his explosiveness…

Indiana basketball’s recruiting class of 2021 has risen to respectability in the national rankings thanks in large part to the rise of recent addition Tamar Bates. The Kansas City, Kan. product jumped from No. 60 to No. 26 in 247Sports’ final rankings for the incoming freshman class. Bates remains a 4-star prospect according to the recruiting service. His updated rating makes him the eleventh highest rated player to sign with Indiana during the recruiting service rankings era. Previously, Bates had never been ranked inside the top-90 by 247Sports before a late surge over the last six months. Fellow IU 2021…
Indiana’s recruiting targets in the class of 2023 are starting to take shape, and one of the more intriguing prospects hails from just south of the Hoosier state. Although coaches cannot initiate contact with class of 2023 prospects until June 15, Indiana’s staff has made it clear that they have strong interest in North Laurel, Ky. shooting guard Reed Sheppard. Sheppard put up impressive numbers during his sophomore campaign at North Laurel High School, scoring 30.1 points per game, tied for first in the state. He also led the Jaguars in assists with 7.1 per game, and shot 55.8% from…

“So Karen (Knight), Coach (Bob Knight), I love you guys and for me this is a complete circle,” new Indiana head coach Mike Woodson said in March, paying homage to his former head coach in his opening remarks at his introductory press conference. Only a year earlier, it was Woodson who played a key role in Knight’s circular path back to IU. Woodson said at the time he spent a month in Bloomington last year prior to Bob Knight’s return to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on February 8, 2020, seemingly on watch to do what he could to ensure that…
Mike Woodson has made it clear that 3-point shooting will be a point of emphasis in his program, and Indiana is keeping a close eye on one of the best from long range in the class of 2022. Indiana has joined virtually every other Big Ten program when it comes to the recruitment of Yorkville, Ill. based shooting guard Jaden Schutt. The Hoosiers have leveraged time spent by a new assistant at another Big Ten foe to jumpstart the process. “Dane Fife is a guy that I talked to at Michigan State, and obviously he is a new assistant at…
