Indiana will open the 2022 football season on Friday evening, Sept. 2, against Illinois. It will mark the first Friday opener in Memorial Stadium history.  When announced last month, the game was slotted as a Saturday contest.  Illinois replaced Northwestern in that season-opening game. The Hoosiers last kicked off a campaign on a Friday in 2005 at Central Michigan and last played on a Friday in 2018 at Minnesota. Indiana jumped on Illinois from the opening tip and surged to a 28-8 first quarter lead. Things never improved for the Fighting Illini. The actions Mike Woodson took on Tuesday when he suspended five players had to feel very familiar to the first-year IU basketball head coach. Nearly 44 years ago, it was Woodson himself who was right in the middle of a mass suspension of Indiana players. On December 12, 1978, three IU players were dismissed from the team and five others, including Woodson, Landon Turner, and leading scorer Ray Tolbert were put on indefinite probation. We’ve entered the drama stage of the IU basketball season.  There was a game on Tuesday night in Evanston, but the suspension of five Indiana players stole the headlines and dramatically altered the game plan for the Hoosiers. Indiana lost to Northwestern by a final score of 59-51 on Tuesday evening at the Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. The Hoosiers led 30-26 at halftime and were led in the game by Race Thompson with 14.  Trayce Jackson-Davis had 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Indiana played the game without five suspended players. Indiana University men’s basketball coach Mike Woodson has announced that Tamar Bates, Michael Durr, Xavier Johnson, Khristian Lander and Parker Stewart will not play tonight against Northwestern for disciplinary reasons. With Rob Phinisee out due to injury, that leaves seven scholarship players available for tonight’s game against the Wildcats. The starting lineup will be Anthony Leal, Trey Galloway, Miller Kopp, Race Thompson and Trayce Jackson-Davis according to Woodson.  Logan Duncomb and Jordan Geronimo are available off the bench.
