Two of the main four national outlets that rank high school basketball prospects put a final stamp on their evaluations for the incoming freshman class. And they’ve confirmed what we already knew — Mike Woodson’s first full recruiting class as head coach at Indiana is one of the program’s best in a decade. Here’s how national outlets Rivals and ESPN look at the four members of Indiana’s 2022 class. Rivals says point guard Jalen Hood-Schifino is a 5-star recruit and the No. 17 overall player in the class. ESPN pegs Hood-Schifino as a 4-star and the No. 24 overall player…

Driving lanes just got a bit less congested in the Big Ten on Wednesday after Illinois big man Kofi Cockburn announced he has put his name in the NBA Draft and will not return to college for his remaining eligibility. Cockburn is just the latest star from the Big Ten to enter the draft early, leaving an opportunity for a shift in the balance of power next season. The 7-foot and 285-pound Cockburn terrorized the Big Ten with his massive frame for three seasons. He averaged career highs of 20.9 points and 10.6 rebounds during his junior campaign. Illinois also…
Our “Names to Know” series provides a quick look at IU basketball recruiting targets as their names emerge on the trail. ————————— Jonathan Powell was already on the radar of Division One programs, but a fast start to his spring has supercharged his recruitment. After he scored 45 points against a good U16 Indiana Elite squad, Powell got an offer on the spot from Illinois, and according to Travis Graf of Rivals, had Indiana wanting to bring him on campus for a visit. This is how 247Sports’ Eric Bossi described Powell’s performance. “One of the better performances of anybody we…

The Indiana staff continues to walk the necessary and delicate tightrope that is roster management in the transfer portal era. Despite possibly having no scholarship openings for their 2022-23 team, the Hoosiers have one transfer guard currently on campus in Wichita State transfer Dexter Dennis, and another is headed to Bloomington this weekend. CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported that West Virginia transfer guard Sean McNeil will visit Indiana this weekend. That visit is one of at least four planned this week by McNeil, along with Virginia, Cincinnati, and Ohio State. Rothstein also reported McNeil plans to visit Louisville at some…
When he walked off the court at the Jordan Brand Classic on Friday in Chicago, the word from Malik Reneau was Indiana would be the first of three visits, maybe more. When he left Bloomington on Sunday, the word he gave the IU staff was much different. No more visits would be necessary. Truth be told, it didn’t even take until Sunday for the 6-foot-8 top-30 forward to decide Indiana would be his new home in a couple months. “It was an instant bond as soon as I stepped on campus with the coaches and players, and their playing style…
Indiana picked up a commitment from 5-star class of 2022 forward Malik Reneau on Monday. “Lock in. 110% committed,” Reneau wrote in a Twitter post. The 6-foot-8 and 215-pound Reneau is a 5-star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite. He is the No. 28 player in nation in the 2022 class, and the No. 4 power forward. A former Florida signee, Reneau took an official visit to Bloomington over the weekend. He decommitted from the Gators after head coach Mike White resigned. With the addition of Reneau, Indiana’s 2022 class has moved into the top-5 nationally according to the 247Sports…
Mike Woodson isn’t hesitating to compete for the best of the best. That became more evident when Indiana offered class of 2025 forward Koa Peat following his dominant performance during the first recruiting live period. The 6-foot-8 Peat plays up two years at the 17U level on the Adidas 3SSB Circuit, and he played up three years last year. He is teammates with fellow IU target Andrej Stojakovic on the Compton Magic. While playing some in front IU assistants including Kenya Hunter, Peat averaged 22.8 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 blocks per game while shooting 52 percent over…
Indiana guard Tamar Bates posted photos of his daughter on his Instagram page over the weekend. “The day my princess arrived and changed my life forever,” Bates said in the post. “She’s the one thing that I never knew I needed & I’m just beyond grateful to call this healthy, beautiful baby girl mine. While there was plenty of blame to go around as it relates to IU’s dismal offensive performance in 2021, poor play by the line justifiably took on much of the finger pointing. The spotlight will be on that group when Indiana’s 2022 season kicks off in early September, and they have head coach Tom Allen’s full attention right now. “I’ve been really hard on this group throughout the whole offseason, in the weight room, in our workout sessions, team and agility runs, and all the things we’ve done with that group in just trying to develop more toughness there,” Allen…
