IU baseball remains a factor in the expanded Big Ten. Indiana will play in its 12th-straight Big Ten Tournament next week.  The Hoosiers have the longest active streak of tournaments made (12) by any team in the conference. Going into their Saturday regular season finale at Michigan, IU was in sixth place in the league.  12 teams will qualify for the Big Ten Tournament.  The field was expanded from eight after the addition of the West Coast schools. Head coach Jeff Mercer won his 100th regular season Big Ten game on Friday night in Ann Arbor. He became the fastest…

C.J. West’s decision to transfer to Indiana for his final season of college eligibility has paid off in a big way. He has signed his first NFL contract with the San Francisco 49ers. The former IU defensive lineman joins former Hoosier quarterback Kurtis Rourke in the Bay Area.  Rourke signed his deal with the 49ers last week. After an impressive season with the Hoosiers, West was chosen in the fourth round with the No. 113 overall pick by San…

Kanaan Carlyle will try to revive his career at the mid-major level. After spending a season in Bloomington, he is transferring to Florida Atlantic, he announced on Friday. The Georgia native began the 2024-25 season as the starting shooting guard in his lone season at Indiana, but soon lost that role.  Carlyle seemed to lose confidence and at times exhibited poor shot selection. For the season Carlyle made six starts in 25 games played and averaged 4.0 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. He struggled to make shots throughout the season and produced 28.9/24.3/42.9 shooting splits. Carlyle transferred…

For the first time this year, new IU basketball coach Darian DeVries and his assistant coaches are allowed to hit the road this weekend and watch high school recruiting targets in person at non-scholastic events. Today through Sunday (May 16-18) marks the first “evaluation period” or “live period” on the NCAA’s recruiting calendar for Division I men’s basketball coaches.  It’s the only live period during the spring. This is the blocking and tackling portion of the recruiting calendar, where DeVries and his main assistants — Kenny Johnson, Rod Clark, and Drew Adams (and others on staff as needed and permitted)…

It went relatively unnoticed, but on Dec. 16, 2024, the IU Student Body Congress passed the following bill: On December 16, 2024, Congress passed Bill No. 1013, authored by Representatives Ryan Gray and Eric Cannon, which advocates for Indiana University Bloomington to Bring Back the Bison. Congress reaffirms its recognition and adoption of the Bison as the official mascot of Indiana University Bloomington as established in 1965. Reinstating the Bison mascot as a tangible symbol would enhance the sense of pride and unity among students, faculty, alumni, and other supporters of IU athletics. The December 2024 online edition of the…

Darian DeVries’ top assistant coaches are likely some of the highest-paid in the country. The Daily Hoosier obtained copies of the memorandums of understanding for new assistant coaches Rod Clark, Kenny Johnson and Nick Norton this week through a public records request. According to those documents, Johnson will make in total before bonuses $750,000 in his first year, Clark will make $650,000, and Norton $200,000.  As previously reported, Drew Adams will make $400,000. Unlike college football, it is very rare for a college basketball assistant coach to make over $1 million.  But there aren’t public databases that aggregate and report their…

2024 wasn’t the first time IU football ascended the mountain and found itself in the national college football conversation. In 1945 Bo McMillin’s Hoosiers completed the program’s only undefeated season and claimed its only Big Ten title.  But two years later McMillin departed for the NFL and Indiana fell into complete disrepair.  The Hoosiers experienced just one season with a winning record from 1948 to 1966. In 1967 John Pont resurrected IU and led them to their only appearance in the Rose Bowl.  But once again the rise was short-lived.  Indiana would go 10 straight years without a winning record…

As Indiana languished through a second straight miserable season in 2022, the change everyone knew was needed finally happened. On Oct. 9, 2022, then IU head coach Tom Allen made a somewhat unconventional move and fired offensive line coach Darren Hiller midway through the season. Allen closed out the season with former IU center Rod Carey coaching the offensive line on an interim basis, and then made a hire that December that continues to play a pivotal role in the program turnaround. “Bottom line is we found, I feel like, the very, very best person for the job,” Allen said…

A near consensus over/under win total for Indiana has emerged in recent days across the popular betting platforms and sports books. They’re all at 8.5. Now that number might be a bit surprising to some as the Hoosiers come off an 11-win season and appear to have rebuilt and maybe even improved the roster for the 2025 campaign. First, let’s stop and admire where things stood a year ago, when IU’s over/under win total was pegged at 5.5. There is consensus belief in a 55% increase in wins by Indiana compared to what was expected a year ago despite what…
