As disastrous as its penultimate weekend of the regular season was, Indiana managed to head into its last three games on the right side of the bubble. The Hoosiers dropped two games Friday and Saturday to practically hand Nebraska the Big Ten title, then lost to Ohio State Sunday before finally claiming a win over the Buckeyes on Monday. By Wednesday, however, the Hoosiers were still seeing their name in NCAA Tournament bracket projections. D1Baseball.com had Indiana as one of the last five teams in and Baseball America had them in as a No. 3 seed in Florida’s region. So…

Mike Woodson’s mind is most focused on basketball and when he’ll actually get a chance to coach it. The first-year Indiana coach isn’t used to having all these NCAA rules about when and where he’s actually allowed to watch his guys play after 25 years as an NBA coach so he’s itching for some on-court instruction whenever he can get it. “I know I get to start on the floor with these guys on the 9th, so I’m looking forward to that,” Woodson said during a Zoom press conference Wednesday. “On the 10th rather. I’m really looking forward to that,…

Mike Woodson’s question for a reporter seemed to be an honest one, not a veiled insult directed at his predecessor. Indiana’s new head coach simply did not know what a pack-line defense was. Rick Bozich of WDRB in Louisville mentioned Archie Miller’s preferred system of defense — and the one Tony Bennett used to win a national title at Virginia in 2019 — to Woodson as part of a question about defense during a Zoom press conference with reporters Wednesday. It is apparently a term Woodson has heard on multiple occasions since coming to Indiana but one that wasn’t going…

Mike Woodson said he likes to keep the details of transfer decisions in house, but on a Zoom call with reporters on Wednesday, he suggested that forward Jerome Hunter’s decision to transfer from Indiana to Xavier was a mutual one. “We decided to part ways,” Woodson said. ” … We just didn’t mix the way I think I wanted it to be between he and I. That’s no knock against him because I think he’s an excellent kid. We decided to part ways. He understood. I understood. He left here and still landed on his feet at Xavier. All I…

In a normal year, college basketball teams would be getting their final answers as to which of their players would be heading off into the NBA draft and which would be returning right about now. The NBA Draft Combine would have been around last weekend and players would be going through interviews now and getting a pretty good sense about whether or not they’d have a chance to be taken. But this is not a normal year with the COVID-19 pandemic having shaken up the NBA calendar as much as any other sport with the exception of the NHL, which…

Former Indiana basketball player and coach, and current basketball analyst and Indianapolis sports radio host Dan Dakich told the website Barrett Sports Media that he lost enough money gambling on the NCAA Tournament to get a wake-up call that he’d lost the understanding of the value of a dollar. To penalize himself for that, he’s signed on as a delivery driver for Door Dash and has been delivering food to people in Indianapolis. “I come from iron and steel workers, teachers, and I lost sight of the value of a dollar,” Dakich told Barrett. “I woke up at 5:30 in…

After Indiana lost its fifth straight game Sunday night, putting its NCAA Tournament hopes in jeopardy after it had already seen its Big Ten title opportunity disappear, Hoosiers coach Jeff Mercer went to visit his father Jeff Sr., who lives next door to him. Jeff Sr. is himself a long-time baseball coach, a former Indiana assistant and one of the founders of the Indiana Bulls travel program. Whenever his son comes over to talk baseball, he gives a sympathetic ear, but also advice that can be unsparing when it has to be. He told Jeff Jr. to get some input…
