Schwarber, Travis, and Phegley Make MLB Opening Day Rosters

Another Major League Baseball season is underway, and once again Indiana University is represented in the big leagues on opening day.

    KYLE SCHWARBER

Of course there was no doubt that Schwarber would be on the Cubs opening day roster.  He started the season going 1-for-3 with a double in a Chicago win.

Schwarber had a productive spring training, hitting .311 with a .429 on base percentage.

For his career Schwarber is hitting .229 with 72 home runs and 163 runs batted in.

    JOSH PHEGLEY

Phegley is back with the A’s and appears to be on track to spend the season in the major leagues as part of a catcher platoon in Oakland.  The plan is for Phegley to split time with veteran Nick Hundley.

The Terre Haute, Ind. native began his career in Chicago but has spent the past four seasons bouncing back and forth between the A’s and the minor leagues.

Phegley has a career .232 batting average with 22 home runs and 98 RBIs.

    SAM TRAVIS

Travis has gotten an early chance to capitalize on an opportunity in Boston.

Due to a calf injury sustained by Steve Pearce the Red Sox started the season with the World Series MVP on the injured list. Taking his place on the 25-man roster will be Travis.

Travis got off to a slow start in spring training but proved more consistent as March unfolded.  He ended up hitting .244 with a home run and seven RBIs in 24 games.

He will be relied upon to share first base duties with Mitch Moreland.

For his career Travis has hit .250 with a home run and eight RBIs in 121 career plate appearances with Boston.

    KEEP AN EYE ON…

    • Aaron Slegers – Spent time in the majors last year with Minnesota and starts the season designated for assignment by the Pirates.
    • Alex Dickerson – Still working his way back from missing two seasons with injuries, Dickerson starts the year in AAA El Paso.
    • Kyle Hart – Red Sox organization.
    • Ryan Halstead – Giants organization.
    • Craig Dedelow – White Sox organization.
    • Scott Effross – Cubs organization.
