It comes three years after he won the award, but IU basketball finally has another Indiana Mr. Basketball winner on the roster.
Notre Dame transfer Markus Burton is the 30th Indiana Mr. Basketball to play for IU. He’s the first to transfer in after starting at another college.
Burton is the first Mr. Basketball at IU since Anthony Leal. IU had three Mr. Basketballs in a row from 2018-20 (Romeo Langford, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Leal), but none since.
Burton won it in 2023 playing for Penn High School in Mishawaka. He finished No. 20 all-time in scoring in Indiana with 2,273 career points. He accumulated 533 rebounds, 512 assists, and 329 steals.
As a senior he averaged a state-best 30.3 points per game, along with 5.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 3.6 steals. He shot 58.2% from the floor and 42.5% from the 3-point line. Burton led Penn to a 28-2 record and semi-state runner-up finish as a senior.

Four of the last five winners have been stars at the college level, including Braden Smith (Purdue), Burton, Flory Bidunga (Kansas, Louisville), and Braylon Mullins (UConn).
