The San Francisco 49ers today announced they have signed QB Nate Sudfeld to a one-year deal.

He’ll share the QB room with fellow former Hoosier Kurtis Rourke.  Defensive tackle C.J. West is also with the NFL franchise.

Sudfeld worked out with the team on Monday before signing.  He did not play in 2024 after being released by the Lions during the preseason.

The news comes after 49ers backup Mac Jones suffered what is being described as a non-serious knee injury.  Rourke is recovering from ACL surgery and is not expected to be available until later in the season.

Rourke was the first IU quarterback to be drafted since Sudfeld.

Sudfeld (6-foot-6, 227 pounds) was drafted by the Washington Commanders in the sixth-round (187th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft. Throughout his seven-year NFL career with the Commanders (2016-17), Philadelphia Eagles (2017-21), 49ers (2021-22) and Detroit Lions (2022-23), he has appeared in six games and completed 25 of his 37 passing attempts for 188 yards and one touchdown to go along with 10 carries for 28 yards.

A 31-year-old native of Modesto, Calif., Sudfeld attended IU for four seasons (2012-15), where he appeared in 37 games (26 starts).

One of the most decorated quarterbacks in Indiana history, Sudfeld left Bloomington first in passing touchdowns (61), passing yardage (7,879), 350-yard games (6), 300-yard games (11), 250-yard games (13), 200-yard games (19), four-touchdown games (5) and three-touchdown games (10), tied for first in 400-yard games (1), second in completion percentage (60.3) and completions (593), third in total offense (8,011) and fourth in attempts (983) on IU’s career lists in 37 games (26 starts).

In his career, he was 593-of-983 (60.3 percent) with 7,879 passing yards, 8,011 total yards, 61 passing TDs, 20 INTs, eight rushing scores and a 144.1 passing efficiency mark, which ranks ninth in Big Ten history.
