THREE QUICK REASONS INDIANA WON
1. Grant Wilson leads a rally. McAteer makes a stunner. Backup quarterback Grant Wilson filled in for Josh Hoover in the second half and completed 9 of 17 throws for 156 yards and a touchdown. He led a scoring drive at the end of regulation, and another in overtime, delivering two perfect throws to Charlie Becker on each drive to make it possible. The Hoosiers needed a 60-yard field goal at the end of regulation from Paddy McAteer to force the extra session. He was just 1 of 3 on field goals entering the game.
2. Overcoming dozens of mistakes. Indiana had penalties, turnovers, missed field goals, and several more mistakes in an uncharacteristic afternoon. Nico Radicic missed a field goal, IU had a field goal blocked, and they botched a snap on a third. Billy Gowers shanked two punts. The Hoosiers had two turnovers and eight penalties for 51 yards. Somehow despite it all, Indiana got in field goal range in just a 19 second drive at the end of regulation to enter McAteer’s range. This time the Hoosiers didn’t miss.
3. Defense stout throughout. They got fooled on a trick play in the first half, but otherwise the Hoosiers were solid on the defensive side of the ball. IU allowed just 215 yards and 10 first downs on the afternoon, and delivered a stop in overtime to secure the win. IU had four sacks and 11 tackles for loss. Tobi Osunsanmi ended the game in overtime with a sack. Minnesota was just 3 of 15 on third down and averaged just 3.6 yards per play.
