IU football: Running back Elijah Green enters the transfer portal

Veteran running back Elijah Green is looking for a new home for his final season of college eligibility.

The move comes as Indiana prepares for their first round College Football Playoff game.  He’s the first IU player to declare for the portal in the December entry window.  Several players announced they would enter during the season.

The timeline for entering the transfer portal (Dec. 9 – 28) overlaps with the College Football Playoff, leaving players little choice but to submit their names as their teams prepare for the tournament.

Green, who transferred in from North Carolina, was productive when given opportunities in 2024, although under unique circumstances.  He rushed 29 times for 201 yards (6.9 yards per carry), and scored five touchdowns.  Behind three running backs on the depth chart, all of Green’s work was late in games that when the score was out of reach.

There appeared to be a window for a major opportunity for Green in 2025 with Indiana.  The Hoosiers primary backs this year — Ty Son Lawton and Justice Ellison — will both exhaust their eligibility whenever IU’s CFP run comes to end.  Green and Kaelon Black appeared to be the main contenders to share the snaps next season.

But with Green departing, it will be Black and freshman Khobie Martin as the only two returning running backs next season.  They’ll also add freshman Sean Cuono. The Hoosiers will obviously be looking to the transfer portal to make additions.  They’ve been tied to UCLA’s T.J. Harden, Louisiana’s Dre Washington, UAB’s Lee Beebe, Jr. and others.
