IU Basketball Recruiting: Class of 2022 Names to Know — Leland Walker

With the 2019-20 high school season now well underway, The Daily Hoosier will be highlighting several players on the radar of the IU basketball program.

One of a few in-state point guards that has the attention of the regional high major programs is North Central (Indianapolis) sophomore Leland Walker.

As a freshman playing in the most talented conference (MIC) in the state of Indiana, Walker averaged 15 points and 2.5 assists per game for the 2018-19 season.

According to North Central, through six games this year Walker is averaging 13.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest while shooting 47.4% from the field overall including 21.9% from three-point range.

Walker is a true point guard with an attacking mindset.  He is a force in transition and he uses his speed and quickness to make up for being relatively undersized.  In the halfcourt Walker has elite ball handling skills for a young player of his age.  As his numbers suggest, Walker needs to improve as a perimeter shooter, and still early in his sophomore season, he clearly has plenty of time to do that.

The 5-foot-10, 160 pound Walker played AAU basketball with Team Teague 2022 over the spring and summer.  That squad was the 2019 Adidas Gauntlet Gold champion.

Walker received his first Division One offer from IUPUI and has early interest from the top in-state schools including IU, Purdue and Butler.  According to a national 247Sports report, Walker has taken unofficial visits to both Indiana and Purdue.

Fans hoping to see Walker can do so this weekend at the North Central Classic on the north side of Indianapolis.  Walker’s Panther squad will host Mt. Vernon, Park Tudor, Avon and Hammond.

North Central is the high school that produced IU players and Indiana Mr. Basketball winners Eric Gordon and AJ Ratliff.

You can watch two videos of Walker from the last few months below.
