IU basketball recruiting: Class of 2022 names to know — in-state guard Fletcher Loyer

Indiana fans typically know the names of the top players in the state, but one of the best juniors might be relatively unknown to this point.

Transferring in from Clarkston, Michigan, top-150 guard Fletcher Loyer has ties all over the Big Ten, and he has found a new home in Indiana.

Brother Foster is a guard at Michigan State, while mother Katie played volleyball at IU and coached at Purdue.

Oh, and if Clarkston sounds familiar, yes, that’s the home of former IU star Dane Fife.  Foster Loyer played there for Dane’s dad Dan Fife and  together they won back-to-back state titles.

As for Fletcher Loyer?  He has transferred to Homestead High School in Fort Wayne, Ind. where he will team up with Illinois bound recruit Luke Goode to form one of the top duos in the state for the 2020-21 season.

The Loyer family moved from Indiana to Michigan when John Loyer became the interim head coach of the Detroit Pistons in 2014.

Indiana has been in contact with Loyer according to multiple reports.  With the program focused on the top in-state talent, Archie Miller and his staff are sure to keep a close on him over the next year.

Loyer, one of the top 3-point shooters in the state of Michigan last year, averaged 21.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists, making 60 3-pointers and shooting 48 percent from beyond the arc last season.  With Loyer leading the way, Clarkston finished 21-1 with a 20-game winning streak when the season ended abruptly due to the pandemic.

The Daily Hoosier watched Loyer play multiple times this summer for the Indy Heat Nike AAU program.  What stands out is Loyer’s high level skill and basketball IQ.  Loyer excels at ball handling, passing and shooting, and he makes his teammates better.

The 6-foot-4 Loyer is ranked No. 135 nationally according to the 247Sports Composite.  That same service lists Loyer as the No. 22 shooting guard and the No. 5 player in the state of Indiana.

Loyer already has offers from Michigan, Missouri, Notre Dame, Purdue and others.  Michigan State and IU are among the schools keeping an eye on him.
