Indiana Football to Debut New Uniforms on Saturday with Historic Significance

    They aren’t exactly throwback uniforms.

Instead, the IU football team will be wearing something of a patchwork of different elements of their history along with some modern aspects that Hoosier fans are accustomed to.

In connection with the school’s bicentennial celebration, college football’s 150th anniversary, and homecoming, IU has unveiled special uniforms for this Saturday’s game against Rutgers.

Below is the full release from the school (via iuhoosiers.com) on the uniforms.

The release does not discuss the unique IU trident logo on the helmet.  In general terms, the interlocking “IU” dates back to the late 1890’s.  This particular version is uncommon, although a similar version has been used for recent IU baseball uniforms and it can also be found around campus.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana unveiled the team’s Bicentennial uniforms for the Bicentennial Homecoming game against Rutgers this Saturday, Oct. 12, at noon EDT.

IU’s uniforms are part of a new, limited-edition collection which includes seven schools and is highlighted by the “Selfless Pack”, which underscores the efforts each university puts forward to leave a positive impact within their community.

The uniforms blend the past with the present, featuring designs that are new to the program while paying homage to Indiana’s DNA.

The uniforms feature a candy-stripe graphic throughout and the jersey features a body-mapping design, using a ribbed knit pattern on the chest and shoulder pads to produce a refined fit.

As an additional nod to the 150th anniversary of college football, a custom “150” patch that outlines the shape of a football is prominently sewn on the right shoulder of each jersey.

The uniforms also use retro-inspired typography, which tie back to the same typography used on Indiana’s 1968 Rose Bowl jerseys.
