Former basketball trainer Tim Garl filed lawsuit against IU Board and AD Scott Dolson

After more than 40 years as the IU basketball trainer, Tim Garl has filed a lawsuit against the IU Board of Trustees and AD Scott Dolson.

In a the lawsuit filed Tuesday in the US District Court for Southern District of Indiana, Garl alleges age discrimination.

Garl’s suit said Dolson told him on March 26, 2025 his employment was being terminated after 44 years due to IU seeking a “fresh start” for the program.  This is consistent with a statement released by Garl in late March, 2025.  Prior to his conversation with Dolson, Garl says he had been in discussions with new IU coach Darian DeVries regarding his role in the program and an offseason training and recovery plan.

Indiana responded to Garl’s claim of age discrimination, citing deficiencies in his performance that began during Mike Woodson’s tenure as head coach.  Woodson denies any such deficiencies.  Several IU basketball players, dating as far back as Calbert Cheaney and as recent as Trayce Jackson-Davis said in a statement the care they received under Garl was better than what they received in the NBA.

At the time of his termination, Garl was a defendant in a federal lawsuit against Indiana University in which former men’s basketball players alleged improper sexual conduct by former team physician Brad Bomba.  That case was dismissed earlier this year.

Garl and Dolson had both been at IU since the early 80s.  They were both part of the men’s basketball program when Dolson was a student manager.

At the time of his departure, the training room at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall was named after Garl.
