Indiana’s offense finally ended its first quarter slump against Michigan. But with one streak broken, another troubling one has emerged. For the first time all season, the Hoosiers scored a touchdown in the opening 15 minutes. But for the second game in a row, IU did not score in the second half and could not move the ball in the fourth quarter. Against Nebraska in Lincoln last week, IU finished with five yards of offense in the final quarter. It somehow got worse on Saturday, albeit against one of the top teams in the country. Indiana recorded -12 yards of…

Before a big crowd, Indiana men’s and women’s basketball kicked off their 2022-23 seasons with vigor. The lower bowl at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall was nearly full for this year’s Hoosier Hysteria. The teams and coaches were introduced, with walkout songs, t-shirt tosses, and some dance moves. The players competed in a few competitions — Chloe Moore-McNeil and Miller Kopp teamed up to win the 3-point contest, and Mackenzie Holmes, Race Thompson, and alum Collin Hartman won the skills competition. Here are some things that stood out from the festivities. ————— Woodson pumps up fans IU’s head men’s basketball coach…

Indiana’s last two weeks have gone awry, for many reasons. But the Hoosiers will look to put those games behind them with a big opportunity on Saturday. IU (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) will host No. 4 Michigan (5-0, 2-0) at Memorial Stadium Saturday at noon. The game will air on FOX, with their Big Noon Kickoff show set to air live from outside the stadium leading up to the game. Michigan is coming off a 27-14 win at Iowa. Indiana, meanwhile, lost in disappointing fashion, getting shut out in the second half in a 35-21 Nebraska home win. IU head coach…

In the weight room at Coral Springs (Florida) High School, Andison Coby quietly went about his business. As a sophomore who’d recently transferred to the school, football was not yet on his radar. He took a weight training class, taught by head football coach Vinny Ziccardi, and mostly kept to himself. Ziccardi would write six lifts on the board for the students to work through during the 45-minute period. He said most would get through only a few exercises. On the first day of that normal class routine, Coby approached Ziccardi midway through class asking what else he could do.…

The halfway point of the college football season brings Indiana its toughest test to date. The Hoosiers (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) will face a ranked opponent for the first time in 2022 when No. 4 Michigan (5-0, 2-0) comes to Memorial Stadium Saturday. The game will kick off at noon and is airing on FOX, whose Big Noon Kickoff pregame show will air live from outside the stadium Saturday morning. Michigan defeated IU 29-7 last season in Ann Arbor, but the Hoosiers came away 38-21 victors when the teams last played in Bloomington in 2020. Here are some notes and…

LINCOLN, Neb. — Indiana football just can’t get out of its own way. The Hoosiers dropped to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play Saturday with their 35-21 loss at Nebraska (2-3, 1-1). They were shut out in the second half, with just 71 yards of total offense — and only five in the fourth quarter. Nebraska was coming off a bye week, after just one game with interim head coach Mickey Joseph at the helm. That break gave Joseph more time to settle in and implement changes, and allowed the Cornhuskers time to adapt to those tweaks. And…

Indiana jumps back into conference play this weekend with a road game at Nebraska. The Hoosiers and Cornhuskers will face off for the first time since 2019 Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska. Nebraska is, historically, a difficult road environment to play in, with a long sellout streak — this game will be the Huskers’ 386th consecutive sellout crowd. And Saturday is their homecoming game. “I know we’re going to get their very best shot. We have to be at our very best, no question,” IU head coach Tom Allen said on Monday. “Our first road game last week,…

Indiana women’s basketball will look different this year. The Hoosiers lost a foundational core last season when Ali Patberg, Nicole Cardaño-Hillary, and Aleksa Gulbe graduated. Patberg, especially, was a natural leader on the floor and graduated as the program’s all-time winningest player. It’s not easy to replace a group that won as much as those three did. That’s a challenge Teri Moren and her staff attacked in the spring, by adding three transfers. Some useful pieces off the bench return, potentially in more prominent roles. Some of the four-woman freshman class could see playing time. But the main reason IU…

Through the first quarter of the season, one of Indiana’s biggest weaknesses has been early offensive struggles. The Hoosiers have had a lot of trouble getting their offense rolling early in games. They’ve scored nine total points in its four opening quarters of games this year. That ranks last among Big Ten teams. IU is trying to figure out what’s happened and how to fix it. “It seems like every time we start a game, we always start off slow, then we start to pick it up in the second half. I just feel like it’s just consistency,” running back Shaun…
