In connection with breaking the news on Monday that quarterback Michael Penix was out for the season with an ACL injury, IU head coach Tom…

Sometimes it is about more than a game.  Sometimes there is more going on in a young man’s life than football. While we were arguing about quarterbacks, X’s and O’s, and why IU seemed so darn flat against Iowa, Reakwon Jones was wondering if his friends and family were alive, and if they still had a roof over their head.  It turns out they didn’t. When Category 4 Hurricane Michael hit the Florida panhandle on the Wednesday leading up to the Iowa game with winds of 155 miles per hour, Jones was supposed to be getting ready for the Hawkeyes. …

If there was a quarterback controversy brewing in Bloomington, it ended abruptly on Saturday afternoon. In his weekly Monday media availability, Indiana University head football coach Tom Allen indicated that true freshman quarterback Michael Penix tore his ACL on Saturday against Penn State. As Indiana took a 21-20 lead over No. 18 Penn State late in the third quarter yesterday, Indiana fans had good reason to be excited.  After a less than inspiring effort the week before against Iowa, this Hoosier football team had clearly not quit on head coach Tom Allen and this 2018 season. If that enthusiasm for the tenuous lead over the Nittany Lions was peppered with a heavy dose of apprehension, there is certainly historical justification for it.  As we saw just moments later when Penn State returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards, any such doubts were surely warranted.…

When the Hoosiers took a 21-20 lead late in the third quarter over Penn State, IU fans once again had hope.  But then the wheels came off yet again.  And it didn’t take long. After a 3-yard Stevie Scott touchdown run gave the Hoosiers that 2nd half lead, the Nittany Lions took the ensuing kickoff 94 yards and scored from 5-yards out on the next play.  The energy inside Memorial Stadium quickly dissipated with Penn State back in front 26-21…
