IU football: Who is coming and going — The defensive line

No position group has seen more change since the end of the 2021 season than the defensive line.

Two starters used up their eligibility, and four more left via the transfer portal.  But Indiana brings back three who have started in the past, brought in three transfers, and they have a promising group of freshmen.

Indiana also has a new position coach in Paul Randolph, who arrived from Texas Tech.  New defensive coordinator Chad Wilt, a former defensive line coach at Minnesota, will also have a voice, along with head coach Tom Allen, who will be calling the defensive plays in 2022.

“I will tell you that the group of guys I’ve got is a great group of guys. I’m really enjoying the room, first and foremost, the character, the people, the energy that they have, the brotherhood that they have started forging already,” Randolph said this week.

The new coach will need to find players who can get to the quarterback on a much more frequent basis after the Hoosiers finished last in the Big Ten in sacks and now lose their top two up front in that category.

Leaving:  Ryder Anderson (Eligibility), Weston Kramer (Eligibility), Jonathan King (Transfer), Gavin McCabe (Transfer), Shamar Jones (Transfer), C.J. Person (Transfer)

Key Returning:  James Head, Jr. (senior+), Demarcus Elliott (senior+), Sio Nofoagatoto’a (senior), Beau Robbins (redshirt junior), Cooper Jones (redshirt freshman)

Incoming Freshmen: Nick James (4-star), Richard Thomas (3-star),  Venson Sneed (3-star), J’Mari Monette (3-star)

Position change:  Caleb Murphy is focused on the offensive side of the football during the spring.
