Indiana will have the foundation of its defensive secondary back for the 2022 season.

Just two days after All-American cornerback Tiawan Mullen announced his plan to return to IU, starting safety Devon Matthews and cornerback Jaylin Williams also announced they will be back in 2022, both via their respective social media accounts.

Matthews has appeared in 40 of 45 career games since arriving on campus, including 26 straight between 2018-21.

The 6-foot-2 Jacksonville product had 55 tackles including four for a loss, an interception and five pass break ups on the 2021 season.  He started all nine games he was available. Matthews suffered an injury in the Minnesota game and was unable to play against Purdue.  He was also knocked out of the season opener against Iowa and missed the following two games with a neck injury.

Matthews was third team All-Big Ten following the 2020 season.

Often referred to as IU’s third starting corner, .Williams has played a meaningful role since his freshman season in 2018.  He has appeared in 44 of 45 career games since arriving on campus and is the team’s active leader in interceptions with six.

In 2021 Williams played in 11 games and had 41 tackles including one for a loss and 11 passes defended.  The latter mark was tied for third in the Big Ten.  He was named honorable mention All-Big Ten after the season.

The Memphis product tied for the team lead, and ranked No. 3 in the Big Ten, and No. 8 nationally in interceptions in 2020.  He earned second team All-Big Ten after that campaign.
