IU Football Recruiting: State’s All-Time Rusher Charlie Spegal Joins Hoosiers

IU capped off a busy recruiting day on Sunday with a commitment from the all-time leading rusher in Indiana high school history.

Hailing from New Palestine High School, Charlie Spegal announced that he would be joining the Hoosiers as a preferred walk-on.

Spegal broke the news via his Twitter account:

After a great home visit with Coach Hart I’m very excited to say I’m committed to Indiana University! Thank you to coach @MHart2032 @CoachAllenIU @KalenDeBoer for the opportunity!! #LEO #GoHoosiers #IUFB #Hoosiers 🔴⚪️🔴⚪️ pic.twitter.com/btw9Clu7Ur

    — Charlie Spegal (@charliespegal32) December 9, 2019

After playing two seasons at Delta and two at New Palestine, Spegal is in a select group of players nationally with over 10,000 rushing yards and over 1,000 career points for a high school career.

According to 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong, Spegal is one of just five high school players in the country to ever hit both of those marks.  One of the others was IU running backs coach Mike Hart, who recruited Spegal to the Hoosiers.

The 5-foot-9, 225-pound Spegal is the only Indiana player to rush for more than 10,000 yards in his career

The Gatorade Player of the Year and likely Indiana Mr. Football, Spegal produced 10,867 yards in his high school career with 173 touchdowns.  His 173 rushing touchdowns and 175 total touchdowns are also Indiana high school records.

Spegal finished both his junior and senior seasons with state championships.  He rushed for 3,168 yards and 55 touchdowns as a senior.

Rated as a 2-star recruit by the 247Sports Composite, Spegal is the No. 3 fullback in the country according to that same service.  He had scholarship offers from Army and Indiana State, and recruiting interest from Ball State and others.

Spegal became the second running back to join the IU 2020 recruiting class.  Virginia product Tim Baldwin, Jr. committed to the Hoosiers earlier in the day on Sunday.
