The advanced metric sites are aligned with the human eye going into the 2022-23 season.

Indiana is a top-15 program and a Big Ten favorite according to popular college basketball data sites KenPom and Bart Torvik.

According to KenPom.com, IU will finish the 2022-23 regular season with a 22-9 record and a 13-7 mark in Big Ten play. Barttorvik.com projects identical records. The two sites project IU will win a Big Ten crown despite the seven losses.  KenPom predicts an outright title, while Torvik sees a tie with Illinois.

Both sites use an algorithm with factors such as returning minutes, recent team performance, transfers and recruiting to develop their preseason rankings.

While both sites have become very popular for their unique statistical view of college basketball utilizing team measurements such as offensive and defensive efficiency, they are data driven models and thus become a bit more insightful as the season progresses.

But a year ago the preseason prognostications by both sites were reasonably accurate.  Both had the Hoosiers as a bubble team. KenPom placed IU at No. 31 while Torvik had the Hoosiers at No. 30 to open the season.  IU finished No. 48 and 28 at the two sites, respectively.  Indiana was the last team in the 2022 NCAA Tournament and played in the first round in Dayton.

This year KenPom has pegged IU as the No. 12 overall team in the country, while Torvik has the Hoosiers at No. 11.  Top Indiana non-conference opponents North Carolina, Kansas, Arizona and Xavier are 9, 8, 10 and 38 at KenPom, and 4, 10, 13 and 20 at Torvik.

Here is how the two sites project the Big Ten:
