March 21, 1979 — New York, New York While Purdue was enjoying one of its best seasons ever, Indiana was building for the future. At a time when the National Invitational Tournament held much greater significance, the Hoosiers and Boilermakers met in New York’s Madison Square Garden for the championship game in 1979. Class of 2022 Westfield, Ind. point guard Braden Smith took an unofficial visit to Indiana on Feb. 23 when the Hoosiers faced Penn State. The 5-foot-10 Smith averaged 18.5 points, 4.7 assists, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game for a 17-7 Westfield squad.  He shot 46 percent overall and 39 percent from three point range. If you were hoping for a big splash in the early days of the Archie Miller era at Indiana, you have no doubt been disappointed. But with a full three seasons now in the books, the progress of the Indiana program is becoming clear.  More tortoise than hare, Miller is advancing Indiana slowly but surely, including what would have been taking his first IU team to an NCAA Tournament in 2020. Scott Dolson knows what peak IU basketball looks like. March 19, 2016 — Des Moines, Iowa One of the great series in college basketball has gone dormant, but the Hoosiers can claim the last victory. Early in the 2015-16 season, even making the NCAA Tournament at all seemed like a stretch for Indiana.  The Hoosiers got off to a 5-3 start that included a poor showing at the Maui Invitational and a blowout loss at Duke. Plucking a respected strength coach from the NFL ranks apparently didn’t come cheap for Indiana. And it is clear that head coach Tom Allen would like to maintain the momentum established in his program by the outgoing staff. One of Indiana’s top recruiting targets spoke extensively about his recruitment with Pat Lawless of Hoop Group. Trey Patterson is a 4-star recruit and the No. 38 player in the country in the class of 2021 according to the 247Sports Composite.  The 6-foot-8 wing took an official visit to Indiana in the fall. The Somerset, N.J. product averaged 19.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game for the 2019-20 season and was named first team All-State while leading Rutgers Prep to a 27-2 record. The return of Bob Knight to an Indiana basketball game was driven by the former players.
