Analytics sites rank IU basketball’s overall transfer portal activity in nation’s top five

Everyone knows by now, Indiana has made some major additions via the transfer portal this offseason.

So far the Hoosiers have added Oumar Ballo (Arizona), Myles Rice (Washington State), Kanaan Carlyle (Stanford) and Luke Goode (Illinois).  All four project to be major contributors next season for an IU squad now routinely appearing in preseason top-25 projections.

Multiple outlets say that talent influx is among the best in the nation.

But what about the net effect of the transfer portal on the IU roster?

There was concern in some circles IU would lose key contributors with remaining eligibility to the portal following a disappointing 2023-24 campaign.  But that never materialized.

The Hoosiers did lose three reserves during the offseason — C.J. Gunn, Kaleb Banks and Payton Sparks, to DePaul, Tulane and Ball State, respectively.  But there’s little question, overall Mike Woodson and his staff have hit an upper-deck home run via the portal this spring.  And there is data to back that up.

College basketball analytics site evanmiya.com says Indiana has the performed the best of any team in the Big Ten, and second best in the country when it comes to its total transfer portal activity, factoring both additions and subtractions, during this offseason.

There are other factors to consider when it comes to examining rosters, including players who exhausted their eligibility or left early for the NBA Draft.  Indiana of course lost starting center Kel’el Ware.  We’ll do a deep dive into all of the roster activity and the outlook for each of the Big Ten’s 18 programs in the coming weeks.

But purely based on the transfer portal, Evan Miya’s algorithm says IU has the No. 2 net transfer portal activity (factoring both additions and subtractions) in the nation, and currently the best in the Big Ten, ahead of Michigan (No. 5), UCLA (No. 12), and Maryland (No. 15).

National recruiting site On3 also has an algorithm for net transfer portal activity, and it currently ranks IU as having the No. 4 net transfer portal activity in the nation, and second best in the Big Ten behind UCLA.

The transfer portal activity of every team in the Big Ten is below.
