IU Basketball Recruiting: Hoosiers Offer 2020 Forward Jaemyn Brakefield

Huntington Prep is somewhat of a hub of recruiting for Indiana basketball.

After recent success at the West Virginia school with the prior coaching staff landing Thomas Bryant and Curtis Jones, Archie Miller has placed a heavy emphasis there with an offer to 2020 center Zach Loveday and discussions with point guard AJ Hoggard.

The latest player from Huntington Prep to receive an IU offer is 2020 forward Jaemyn Brakefield.  The 6-foot-8 four-star recruit announced the offer from the Hoosiers on his Twitter account.

Brakefield is ranked as the No. 33 player nationally in the class of 2020 according to the 247Sports Composite.  That same service rates Brakefield as the No. 5 power forward in the country among incoming high school seniors.

247Sports Director of Scouting Jerry Meyer provides this evaluation of Brakefield on his profile page there, comparing him to former Wisconsin star Sam Dekker:

“Solid size for a forward. A smooth athlete. Motor has come into question at times. Skilled lefty. Can stretch defense with shooting. Has ability to score off dribble. Adequate handler and passer. Good rebounder and defender when playing with passion. Should develop into a first-round draft selection.”

Originally from Milwaukee, Brakefield plays for Wisconsin based Phenom University on the Nike EYBL Circuit.  He now calls Mississippi home.  Phenom is one of the top teams on the circuit with an 11-2 record.

He has averaged 16.3 points per game on 60.2% shooting from the field through 12 games during the spring.  Brakefield has shot 30% from long range (on 30 attempts) and 87% from the foul line thus far during AAU action.  He has added 5.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals per contest.

Brakefield averaged 19.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game for Huntington Prep last year.

A wide range of power five schools have offered the versatile prospect including Mississippi, Louisville, Alabama, Auburn, West Virginia and Baylor.
