Several IU baseball players could hear their name called as the 2024 MLB First Year Player Draft begins this weekend (July 14-16) in Arlington, Texas. The draft will be held simultaneously with MLB All-Star weekend at the home of the defending World Series Champions, the Texas Rangers. In total, 107 former Indiana players have been drafted, dating all the way back to 1966. IU had two players picked in 2023 in relief pitcher Craig Yoho (8th Round) and shortstop Phillip Glasser (10th Round). According to a Friday report by the IndyStar, IU and Adidas have finalized a 10-year extension with at least $54 million in guaranteed compensation. IU and Adidas have been partners since 2004. Indiana’s current deal with adidas was set to expire this year. The two sides in 2016 agreed to an eight-year extension worth $53.6 million. The new contract will take the partnership to 30 years — through 2034. “Adidas has been a good partner for us in the department,” IU deputy athletics director Stephen Harper said in February during an appearance on Mike Woodson’s radio show. Former IU basketball one-and-done star Eric Gordon will not get a chance to represent his mother’s native country in the 2024 Olympic Games. The Bahamas lost to Spain 86-78 on Sunday evening with a trip to Paris on the line. Gordon scored 15 points in the loss on 5-of-11 shooting. Now the former Hoosier will turn his attention to his 17th season in the NBA.  Gordon has signed to play for Philadelphia in 2024-25, his 17th season in the NBA. The New York Knicks formally announced their re-signing of former IU basketball star OG Anunoby on Saturday. Multiple reports have pegged Anunoby’s new deal at five years and $212.5 million, the largest contract in Knicks history. In a graphic posted on X by IU staffer Adam Howard, Anunoby’s new contract is also “the largest contract signed by an Indiana Hoosier.” Knicks beat writer Fred Katz of the Athletic says Anunoby’s massive contract is fully guaranteed. “Since his arrival in New York, OG has personified the type of player and teammate this organization and city embody,” said Knicks president Leon Rose…

Indiana head diving coach Drew Johansen has been named the head coach for the U.S. Olympic Team for diving at the 2024 Paris Games, as USA Diving announced its full coaching staff this week. Johansen will lead Team USA in a fourth-straight Olympics, serving as head coach since 2012. In that span, U.S. divers have totaled nine medals. Three Indiana University divers – Andrew Capobianco, Jessica Parratto and Carson Tyler – will compete in Paris. Former Hoosier track star Rikkoi Brathwaite qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. He will represent his home country of the British Virgin Islands in the 100 meter dash. Brathwaite is a two-time national champion, winning the 100 meters in 2023 and 2024. He currently ranks 33rd in the world rankings with a score 1246. His fastest time this year in the 100-meters is 10.03 at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. Highly respected former IU track and field and cross country coach Ron Helmer passed on July 4 at the age of 77, Helmer coached Hoosiers to NCAA titles and appearances in the Olympics over his 15 seasons in Bloomington.  He retired in 2023.
