Behind a solid core of returning veterans and talented newcomers, Indiana came into the season with high expectations. Those expectations are shared by several national ranking services that have the Hoosiers in the Top 25. The Hoosiers are currently ranked 20th by Baseball America and D1Baseball.com.
The Hoosiers started off the season at 3-1 at the Brittain Resorts Baseball at the Beach event in South Carolina. Take a look back at last week’s games, IU’s statistical leaders and the upcoming schedule.
OKLAHOMA 6 INDIANA 3
The Hoosiers dropped their season opener to the Sooners. After jumping out to a 2-0 first inning lead it was all Oklahoma the rest of the way. Logan Sowers went 3 for 4 including a home run. Ryan Fineman was 2 for 4 and had a RBI. The IU bullpen combination of Nick Eaton and Austin Long delivered 3 scoreless innings in relief.
INDIANA 5 KANSAS STATE 0
The combination of Hoosier starter Pauly Milto and reliever Tommy Sommer were lights out in this IU shutout victory. Milto went six innings for the win while Sommer went the last three for the save. Four different Hoosiers had 2 hits including Sowers, Fineman, Elijah Dunham and Matt Gorski.
INDIANA 8 SOUTH ALABAMA 4
Indiana’s Logan Kaletha hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The 17th-ranked Jaguars led 4-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning before the Hoosiers’ Luke Miller tied the game with a solo home run. IU’s Cal Krueger retired USA in the top of the ninth, and then the Hoosiers loaded the bases on a hit by pitch, a sacrifice bunt, a double steal and two intentional walks.
That brought up Kaletha, who took the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall for the game-winner. Kaletha, the Hoosiers’ lead-off hitter, drove in five runs in the game, including an RBI double in the second inning.
The Hoosiers also stole an amazing 8 bases including 3 by Laren Eustace.
INDIANA 6 COASTAL CAROLINA 5
Indiana rallied from a 5-3 deficit to close out their South Carolina visit. The Hoosiers also had to overcome 3 errors and 14 hits surrendered as their pitching staff and fielding bent but didn’t break.
Luke Miller led the way with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs while Logan Kaletha added 3 runs, 2 hits and an RBI.
The bullpen combination of Kade Kryzsko, Cal Krueger and Matt Lloyd combined for 5 scoreless innings.
THE NEXT 3 GAMES
