Costly Turnovers and Mistakes This was one of those games where it seemed Indiana beat themselves as much as their opponent. The Hoosier defense opened the game with a key three-and-out forcing Penn State to punt from their 19-yard line, but the great defense was negated by a muffed punt by Indiana punt returner Whop Philyor, handing the ball to Penn State at the Indiana 27-yard…

Indiana defeated Nebraska 38-31 on Saturday to improve to 6-2 on the season overall and 3-2 in league play. Here are our five key takeaways from the game. What Backup Quarterback? Indiana left the Spartan Stadium field with an all too familiar feeling. The Hoosiers (3-2) came to East Lansing looking to upset No. 25 Michigan State and win back the Old Brass Spittoon by beating the Spartans on their home turf for the first time since 2001. And the Hoosiers, as has happened often in recent seasons, came close. Closer even than Saturday’s 41-30 final score indicates. Tied at 31 with two minutes remaining, the Hoosiers couldn’t get one more stop.  Moments later, the emotions in the locker room were still raw. “Tough way to lose,” head coach Tom Allen…

Consider it quite a UConntrast. After suffering a beat down at the hands of Ohio State last week, Indiana made sure visiting Connecticut was on the receiving end Saturday as the host Hoosiers romped 38-3 at Memorial Stadium. It took a minute for IU to get going. The Hoosiers got off to a shaky start when Indiana freshman David Ellis dropped the opening kickoff. Ninety seconds later Indiana sophomore tight-end Peyton Hendershot coughed up the ball, with UConn junior linebacker Omar Fortt recovering at the Huskies’ 38-yard line. After a UConn field goal to take the initial 3-0 lead, it…

It wasn’t the sort of history Indiana wanted to make. The Hoosiers suffered their twenty-fifth consecutive loss to Ohio State in a 51-10 wipeout — the Buckeye’s biggest margin of victory against the Hoosiers in Bloomington. The score only tells part of the story.  The Buckeyes owned all aspects of this game. Let’s start with this number:  9. That was Indiana’s total for rushing yards in the first half Saturday. Put a 1 in front of it and a 6 behind it and you get Ohio State’s rushing yardage by halftime: 196. And that stat was thematic, relating to the…
